The 12 Most Stylish Summer Music Videos–Ever:
From Solo Beyonce to Destiny’s Child, The 12 Most Stylish Music Vids
We’d argue: Summer music videos > regular music videos. OK, summer here in NYC, so we’re a touch biased at the moment, but hear us out: these sun-soaked videos are brilliant at capturing the pure bliss of basking in the rays, sinking your toes into the sand, and running your fingers through the ocean’s waves—and on a more symbolic level, communicating messages of optimism, carefreeness, empowerment, youth, and love.
Layer an upbeat soundtrack over it, and it’s happiness condensed into a three-minute video. No one’s ever sad on a sunny day at the beach (unless you’re Lana Del Rey). And on the fashion front, breezy caftans, playful printed dresses, and cute one-pieces are definitely far superior to burdensome winter layers. So with that said, scroll through for the most stylish summer music videos—and get ready to be whisked away.
12. “Running” by No Doubt
This achingly beautiful song is all about falling in love, which is what we’ve done—with Gwen Stefani’s striking retro printed dress, with its oversized dots, playful twirl-worthy skirt (think of all the Boomerangs in 2017!), and cute tie-front bow.
11. “Rock the Boat” by Aaliyah
Not only was this the last song she sang and recorded before her untimely death (RIP, Aaliyah), but it also has some of the best outfits, like her bright orange off-the-shoulder knit crop top (how on-trend, right?) and tie-dyed sarong; the pristine white separates that she coordinated with her dance crew; the acid-wash jeans; the fiery red fishnets; and that stunning diaphanous black gown during the underwater scene. So good.
10. “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” by Jennifer Lopez
One of J.Lo’s earlier classics with one of her equally classic scenes: when she strips down to her little white cami and gold lamé bottoms on the beach. Sexy, understated, and very J.Lo.
9. “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want” by Rihanna
Rihanna performs a series of outfit changes in her tropical music video, and the only thing that outshines her beachy attire—jewel-lined caftan, sequined crop top, pretty sarongs, and that metallic bikini top—are her accessories. Those oversize teardrop sets? The lace chandelier earrings? That giant cuff? And the chunky necklaces? Want, want, want, want.
8. “California Gurls” by Katy Perry (ft Snoop Dogg)
When Katy Perry commits to a theme, she really commits, so even though these looks are more costume-y and less outfits you’d wear IRL, they’re still pretty damn sweet, like that candy dot dress, peppermint swirl bikini, or donut tops. Snoop Dogg’s cupcake-printed suit also deserves a shout-out.
7. “All in My Head (Flex)” by Fifth Harmony (ft Fetty Wap)
Further proof that one-pieces are back (and continue to be back) in a major way—four of the five Fifth Harmony girls each wore a different suit (florals, sheer mesh, plunge-neck, and lace-up), though we must say Normani Kordei looks incredible in her crochet Kiini bikini.
6. “Drunk in Love” by Beyonce (ft Jay Z)
All hail Queen Bey! Originally, she was supposed to wear three outfits for the music video, but according to stylist Lysa Cooper, “when Jay Z saw her outfit, he said, ‘You’re wearing that the whole time.’ She looked so banging, there was no need to change.” Sexy and chic, Beyonce wore a black vintage Eres bikini, a see-through Wendy Nichols tulle dress, complete with Jennifer Fisher jewelry. Good call, Jay Z, good call.
5. “Anything Could Happen” by Ellie Goulding
Shipwrecked and lost, it starts off like a live-action version of Little Mermaid, but instead of wearing some tarp and rope, Ellie Goulding is dressed in a breezy, ethereal design that catches the wind with every movement. The plot may be tragic, but at least she looks angelic.
4. “When Love Takes Over” by David Guetta (ft. Kelly Rowland)
Who needs a one- or two-piece when you have a gown as fierce as Kelly Rowland’s? In “When Love Takes Over,” she walks right into the ocean, dress and all, with an unapologetic, badass attitude—that matches her sexy cut-out number.
3. “Malibu” by Miley Cyrus
We’re obsessed with Miley Cyrus’s new sound, new aesthetic, new everything—and her recently released carefree “Malibu” video provides plenty of that, like the ruffled little white dress she wears next to a waterfall, a string bikini and netted skirt for a frolic along the shore, pretty white separates as she sits in a field of flowers, a slouchy knit with bikini bottoms as she dances on the beach, and a sweet bow-appliqued set as she trails along a bouquet of balloons. Free-spirited, relaxed, and so chic.
2. “Honey” by Mariah Carey
This mini movie is intense: There’s an abduction, an escape, some intense stunts (and all in stilettos, of course), a high-speed jet ski chase, and a reunion. But despite all the action, one thing remains constant: Mariah Carey’s wardrobe, from the little black slip in the beginning to the crocheted bikini in the end.
1. “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child
If this empowering, girl-power anthem by Destiny’s Child doesn’t pump you up with the strength and belief you can tackle anything head-on—like surviving the wilderness in sheer cut-out dresses, animal-printed bikinis, and coordinating camo sets—then we don’t know what will.
